My first crocheted Dalek...

My first crocheted Dalek...

Here is my latest project a crocheted Dalek. The pattern is available here. Thanks to Nys for her advice on making the arms(!?) It’s back to Christmas gift making now. He wasn’t nearly as difficult to make as anticipated. I have only been crocheting for 6 months or so and with a bit of help from friends and youtube – woo hoo he is done!

crocheted grenade in progress

I haven’t been blogging or writing a lot lately. I have discovered a passion for crochet and have immersed myself in wool, hooks and patterns. I have also discovered an enclave where library folk craft wonderful objects.

We held our first library stitch n bitch last week and the time went so fast. We have also started our new  group blog and it is available here. I am working on a crocheted grenade at the moment. It is the best form of social networking: getting together with like minded people to create *beam*.

Pattern available from the Craft Cartel. Craft with a difference! It is a work in progress but I have already have a couple of friends ask for their own.

I will try to blog more regularly.

Peace and eat less meat and help reduce your carbon footprint :o )

Crochet is the new black…

I have learned to crochet over the last couple of months and thought I would share the wonderful world of crochet with you all. I was given Creepy Cute Crochet for my birthday back in February and decided that during winter I would learn how to do it.

I started with some old skool crochet books from my library and then progressed to this great book Stitch-Bitch-Crochet-Happy-Hooker (I love the patterns). I also picked up the Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Needlework . These books were enough to get me going. I supplemented my reading with  some videos from youtube . I am a visual learner and the videos helped enormously. Along the way I spent an evening with a crocheting mentor. A few of us got together ate lots of chocolate biscuits and she shared her wisdom.

The most difficult thing for me is  that I am not great at reading patterns and I loose count often. However, I have discovered a new world – one filled with hooks and stitch markers and all sorts of other crocheting paraphernalia that I find I now must have.

I have been frequenting wool shops and have developed a wool addiction. It can be pricey!

I now crochet when I ride the train and bus to work and on lazy Saturday mornings at my favourite cafe I have been known to pull out my crochet. I never thought I would be one of those librarians who pulled out their craft work in the staff room or at meetings… but I did have it out in the staff room the other day and sometimes I long to get it out at meetings.

I have also started following other librarians who are into art and craft on Twitter and am proud to shout to the world crochet ROCKS! Crochet is the new black!

Below are a couple of finished projects:

Ninjas from Creepy Cute

I love these little guys I have made a few. I am really interested in making more amigurumi. I hope to tackle Bender soon! But I have to work up to it.

This pattern is from Happy Hookers and I love it. This one is for my BF’s mother. Her favourite colour is purple.

tardis_cover.jpgI own an ipod touch and when I was catching up on reading the blogs I follow. I was thrilled to see a tardis phone cover for an iphone and my ipod will fit in it. I do use the my ipod for work check emails etc… but would love the full functionality of the iphone. Maybe this year.

Craft Tardis is a great community and I have mentioned them before.  It is one of my favourite blogs. The instructions to make the phone cover are provided.  I would join the community but feel that I need to make something and take photos before I can.  Although I could post pictures of my Dr Who t-shirts.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Peace

KnittingKnittingKnitting

I visited my colleague whose Mum knitted a dalek. It really is beautiful. Now another colleague informs me that she only needs to finish the head and she will be finished her dalek. I met the Marketing Director at my place of work and she had a talking dalek on her desk and then we chatted about Cybermen. You never know who is a closet “Who” fan (Dr Who not the band…).

I wish I could knit. I have started thinking about “goals” for 2008. I know I am getting in early so far my list includes:

  1. Learning to swim (a tragedy cos I live in Australia and I am not very confident in the water – earmarked January for this)
  2. Learing to surf
  3. Completing a triathlon
  4. Starting a PhD
  5. Learn to dance – the two step is a bit passe now and I like to bust a move
  6. Be an advocate for librarians and libraries
  7. Go to a least one overseas conference

I think this will keep me really busy. So I don’t think I will add too much more to it for now. With Christmas round the corner, the new year will be here before we know it.
