Twitter, Facebook, MySpace – oh no! Social media responsible use…

I have started research for a workshop/conversation about the role of social media in our library. Some of the issues I am going to touch on are:

  1. Building professional networks
  2. Social media policy – do we need one – YES
  3. Social media strategy for building relationships with our clients
  4. Twitter – what’s all the fuss about

I have become a microblogging evangelist after attending a conference in May where the Twitter backchannel was vibrant and exciting.  During the conference I got to meet some of the people tweeting and I was a convert. Since then I have maintained and built onto the network established at that conference. I will post the presentation on slideshare when I have finished it.

Peace

Peace out

Crochet is the new black…

I have learned to crochet over the last couple of months and thought I would share the wonderful world of crochet with you all. I was given Creepy Cute Crochet for my birthday back in February and decided that during winter I would learn how to do it.

I started with some old skool crochet books from my library and then progressed to this great book Stitch-Bitch-Crochet-Happy-Hooker (I love the patterns). I also picked up the Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Needlework . These books were enough to get me going. I supplemented my reading with  some videos from youtube . I am a visual learner and the videos helped enormously. Along the way I spent an evening with a crocheting mentor. A few of us got together ate lots of chocolate biscuits and she shared her wisdom.

The most difficult thing for me is  that I am not great at reading patterns and I loose count often. However, I have discovered a new world – one filled with hooks and stitch markers and all sorts of other crocheting paraphernalia that I find I now must have.

I have been frequenting wool shops and have developed a wool addiction. It can be pricey!

I now crochet when I ride the train and bus to work and on lazy Saturday mornings at my favourite cafe I have been known to pull out my crochet. I never thought I would be one of those librarians who pulled out their craft work in the staff room or at meetings… but I did have it out in the staff room the other day and sometimes I long to get it out at meetings.

I have also started following other librarians who are into art and craft on Twitter and am proud to shout to the world crochet ROCKS! Crochet is the new black!

Below are a couple of finished projects:

I love these little guys I have made a few. I am really interested in making more amigurumi. I hope to tackle Bender soon! But I have to work up to it.

This pattern is from Happy Hookers and I love it. This one is for my BF’s mother. Her favourite colour is purple.

Academic literacy & honesty

July 7, 2009 at 1:54 am | In academic honesty, academic libraries, academic literacy, international students, teaching | 2 Comments

On Friday I went along to a seminar/workshop held at Victoria University. It showcased an academic literacy and honesty resource developed with funding from ALTC (Australian Learning and Teaching Council). The resource is made up of the following:

  1. Video – April’s Journey – a Chinese Masters student’s experience of being a student in Australia
  2. Video – Richard and Kim – a look at academic literacy & honesty
  3. Video – Grumpy & Simiao – a practical approach to using academic literacy/honesty skills in an assignment
  4. Graphic novels

Academic literacy includes – critical thinking, creativity, academic honesty

I was impressed and believe that it will be useful for international students in many contexts. The pilot project website is available here: tls.vu.edu.au/altc/index.cfm. You will need to register. The videos and graphic novels should be available on the website in the not to distant future.

My key learnings from the session were:

  • Many of the academic literacy/honesty resources available are “punitive, middle-class and anglophilic”
  • Resources need to be engaging, culturally relevant and positive
  • More academic libraries are creating positions that acknowledge that international student cohort have particular service needs (Newcastle, Swinburne, Victoria University)
  • Some of the issues facing international students include: isolation, loneliness, difficulty with English, culture shock, managing family expectations
  • Multimedia resources are useful with the international cohort
  • Academic literacy/honesty needs to be embedded into curriculum
  • Beta test everything with the target audience and then do it again!
  • Culturally relevant context is important
  • Create resources that can be chunked into small bits and mashed in with other materials/resources
  • Create resources that can be repackaged for different uses
  • Create resources that can be uploaded into youtube/learning management systems
  • Create resources that can be shared!

So keep an eye on the VU website for more information on the project. They are also looking for partners to test the resources with students. Their details are here: tls.vu.edu.au/altc/index.cfm.
